SHILDON 2 WHITLEY BAY 0
Saturday 7th February 2026
Report by Jensen Coleman
Following a 3-1 win at a stubborn Horden CW side four days prior, Jay Bates’s 4th placed Bay were faced with their biggest match on the road: a visit to title-chasing Shildon, who were unbeaten at home all season on their new 4G surface. The starting XI saw a couple of changes with Luca Shilling unavailable, paving the way for Alfie Livermore to start for the second time in three games, while Gildo Da Silva swapped places with Nathan Nkunku, as the latter was dropped to the bench.
Shildon may have been second come the start of the game, but it was fourth placed Bay that forged the first opportunity; Callum Larmouth sending a long-range free kick just over the bar in the early minutes.
Down the other end with just eight minutes gone, the hosts opened the scoring as a teasing cross in from the right by Leighton Harris saw Billy Greulich-Smith rise highest and power the ball home past Asikaogu from close range - a clinical header which saw the home side a goal to the good (1-0).
It could have got worse for Bay soon after that as Seasiders captain Michael Scott made a brilliant last minute tackle to deny the impressive Luke Spalding from a few yards out. Greulich-Smith also unfortunate to not add to his personal tally for the afternoon. Shildon No.10 Ben Reay then left the pitch injured for the hosts to be replaced by Adam Lennox.
Pure dominance from the home side was then almost thwarted by Mikel Thompson, who found himself through on goal and struck the ball well, but Sam Taylor was alert and saved well.
The hosts would go on to double their advantage on the 23rd minute, as Ciaran Banks got down the left hand side and bent a decent ball in towards Lennox, who headed home from all-but two yards out to put Shildon on course to go top, in light of table-toppers Guisborough Town’s visit to Thornaby being postponed (2-0).
Lennox could have added to his solitary strike seven minutes later, only for Spalding’s teasing ball in to whistle past him, but it was then picked up by Harris who cut inside and looked for the top corner, but Asikaogu was equal to it and saved comfortably. The Shildon No.16 continued to have the right impact; his ball in towards Greulich-Smith almost resulting in a third goal, but Asikaogu once again prevented the advantage increasing. Luke Spalding also saw another effort of his deflect wide off Scott.
As the first 45 came to an end, Mackenzie Sharpe and Mikel Thompson saw attempts of their own blocked or travel wide, whilst at the other end, Greulich-Smith was twice kept out; first by Asikaogu before Spalding saw his rebound cleared off the line by Jack Errington.
The second half saw more of the same from the hosts as their dominance continued, but Leighton Harris saw a header from a free kick saved comfortably by Asikaogu before seeing another effort thwarted by the Bay goalkeeper moments after. Ciaran Banks’s cross also unfortunate not to be swept home by Lennox as Bay continued to soak up the ever-increasing Shildon pressure.
Banks then set up an clear-cut opportunity for Luke Spalding following a incredible run forward, but the latter was unable to take the chance; Asikaogu forced into action once again to make the save. Greulich-Smith’s ball in towards Harris at the far post also unlucky not to be converted by the latter. The pressure continued to mount as Asikaogu saved from Lennox at close-range before another shot whistled just wide at the far post. A header from Thomas Price also travelling wide from a corner moments after.
The hosts’ hunt for a third to kill the game continued in earnest, with Spalding yet again blasting forward towards goal before seeing Asikaogu save another effort of his finding the back of the net. Greulich-Smith saw another headed effort at the near post cleared by the Whitley Bay goalkeeper from a corner soon after.
The final two opportunities of the game saw Mechack Kanda send a wayward strike well over the bar with what proved Bay’s only real chance of the second half, before Spalding found himself through one-on-one with Asikaogu yet again; the outcome was identical to before, Asikaogu saving from the pacy winger once more.
Ultimately, the day belonged to the hosts who, in truth, were comfortable from the first whistle and deserved the three points that saw them top of the table at 5pm. Bay, however, were unfortunately dominated by Shildon on an afternoon where the pressure was constantly on, topped off by Tuesday’s Man-Of-The-Match Callum Larmouth leaving the pitch injured with 15 minutes to go. The title now out of reach, Jay Bates’s charges will now look to shore up their place in the play-offs, starting with yet another voyage on the road to Northallerton Town on Valentine’s Day looking to avoid heartbreak in their chase for promotion.

Man 0f the match: Jack Errington - Despite an incredibly frustrating afternoon for Jay Bates’s men and a resilient Mauro Asikaogu keeping the hosts from running away with it, the Bay No.6 looked a rare diamond in the rain. A clearance off the line to prevent a certain Shildon third late in the first half assured the centre-back topped off a fantastic effort on the
