Speaking after Whitley completed a remarkable comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Redcar Athletic, manager Derek Forrest was naturally thrilled with the result, adding that he was pleased with the way his team approached the game after many of them had been delayed by heavy traffic on the way to Redcar. “We’ve started well and passed the ball well on a very good pitch by the way - it’s a great set up here. I was quite encouraged but then we lost our way a little bit. They (Redcar) had a really good chance before they got their penalty. The lads have told me it’s not a penalty but at 1-0 you go in at half time and think to yourself ‘How’s that happened?’ because we’d looked threatening up until the final bit. So the message was about having a lot of belief and sticking to your game plan which was passing the ball, manage the spaces and work well. But we’ve conceded a second goal and it was devastating, you’re 2-0 down and you think maybe it’s not going to be our night, but credit to Redcar, they’ve been on a bad run and they’ve got themselves two up but then we’ve scored a really, really good goal. We passed it through, chested it, passed it and Malky’s finished it. Then we got another great goal quite quickly to make it 2-2. We brought Adam Shanks on as well and Adam scored another sublime goal. The body movement and the little finish is a top striker’s goal and it’s made it 3-2. Even then we dug in and defended quite well again. The belief’s there, I keep saying to the lads ‘come on you’ve got to believe in yourselves more; you’ve got the ability.’ So it’s a fabulous night for the club, three wins in a row, I think they’re believing in themselves and their quality. It was a good night’s work after being 2-0 down.”
