“When you score in the last minute it’s always a good feeling”

Report by Julian Tyley

Callum Larmouth scored Whitley’s winning goal against West Auckland deep into stoppage time and was delighted to see his plan for the free kick work to perfection.

“Yes it was good. I heard the keeper shout to his wall ‘jump’ so I knew I was going under the wall. He put a big wall in so there wasn’t really any way to go unless I went under the wall and it worked.

“When you score in the last minute it’s always a good feeling but we deserved it, the lads played excellent today. After Meeshi got the equaliser it was literally attack, attack, attack. We knew that we had the momentum to go on and score one more goal and win the game and that’s exactly what we did. With free kicks I generally go for the hard and powerful. It’s was a good free kick and I’m so glad we got the three points. We thoroughly deserved it.”

As for how his first season at Hillheads has gone so far, he explained “I think we maybes started a bit slower than we thought we would but we’ve shown that we can battle and win games. It’s just showing with the crowds we’re getting, 300 - 400 every home game and it’s amazing to see, It’s definitely good. They help us on so much and they make a massive difference.

“With two games in two days we knew it was going to be hard and it was tough, but the lads have done the job and I couldn’t be any more proud of them.

“There’s no better feeling in the changing rooms than when you’ve won the game. It was bouncing in there when we went back in.”

Looking ahead he added “We just need to win as many games as we can. We’re getting players back and the lads just need to keep doing what they’re doing.”
