We are saddened to learn of the death of Ray Wrightson, who was a key member of the Bay side in the 1967/68 season. Ray joined Whitley Bay from Bedlington and made 40 appearances for the club in that season, scoring 17 goals. He made his debut in August 1967 and scored a hat trick a month later in a 9-1 victory against Evenwood Town. He played in two cup finals that season, collecting a Northumberland Senior Cup winners medal after a 4-0 victory over Newcastle University at St James Park. He scored in the Northern League Cup Final Replay against Spennymoor when Whitley were narrowly beaten 3-2.
Ray joined North Shields the following season where he won a FA Amateur Cup winners medal.
We would like to offer our condolences to Ray's family and friends.
