Speaking after Tuesday’s final game of the season at Newcastle Benfield, manager Liam McIvor expressed the views of most Bay fans. “It was a typical end of season game to be honest. I thought we were good first half, a couple of half chances and if we’d been a bit more clinical in our passing we could have created a lot more chances”.
The game livened up after the break, especially with the goal from Fin Neary, which earned special praise from the manager. “It was an unbelievable goal by Fin. I was over the moon for him. He’s come in from Seaham and he’s been excellent. He’s 18 years old and has played nearly every game for me and he’s going to be one for the future I think. I think his touch set him up, a fantastic finish, a wonder goal.”
The lead could have been doubled just minutes later. “Yes, Josh hit the bar, he was through and should have scored really.”
The Benfield equaliser from former Bay winger Noah Millington came soon after. “We should have pressed the shot quicker. It went through Andy’s legs and through Dan’s leg as well.
“Then there was Andy’s cross from the right for Lewis Suddick to put in the net but that was offside. I think we all thought it was a goal, so it’s frustrating.”
In conclusion he commented “It’s been a long season, starting with pre-season back in June so I think we’re all ready for a break.”
