Whitley Bay FC are pleased to announce Stephen Turnbull as their latest acquisition ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Turnbull has a wealth of experience in non league football, playing for Gateshead, Blyth Spartans and Harrogate and most recently Morpeth Town where he had a spell as player/manager. The centre midfielder has spent the majority of his career at Blyth, for whom he scored a memorable goal in front of BBC TV cameras in their FA Cup victory at Hartlepool, the club where he began his career.
Stephen told us “I’ve missed playing and the buzz at 3 o’clock on a Saturday afternoon. Obviously I know Nick very well from the time we spent together at Morpeth. I can see that he’s putting a good team together. He’ll change things at Whitley with the group of experienced and younger lads he’s bringing in and we’ll be looking to finish as high as possible in the league.”
Nick Gray spoke highly of his latest recruit. “Steve will be an outstanding player and person both on and off the pitch. He has very high standards and will be pushing himself to the limit along with guiding and helping all the other players. I know he feels he has unfinished business as a player and I can’t speak highly enough about him. He will dictate things in the middle of the park and set a winning mentality. I have learnt that top players are just as important to a team off the pitch as on it. The type of senior players that are coming in are crucial to setting the standards and helping the younger players to develop and continue improving."
Welcome to Whitley Bay Stephen!
