MARSKE UNITED 1-0 WHITLEY BAY

With both sides languishing in the bottom half of the Northern League Division One table, Whitley Bay travelled to Marske United looking for their second league win that would finally see them up and running for the new campaign. Two new signings started for the visitors; Joseph Power and Liam Heywood making their debuts at left-back and in midfield respectively. Luca Shilling also made his return to Jay Bates’s side.
The start to the game by both teams would be a suitable tease of what was to come throughout; Dom Joynes seeing a close-range header tipped over the bar by Adam Cameron before Clayton MacDonald’s fierce strike minutes after forced another stop from the Bay goalkeeper. Alfie Livermore’s shot from Jamie Clark’s cutback was also kept out well by Marske stopper Mike Algie early on.
Some intricate build-up play from Whitley saw Jamie Storey, Livermore and Kieren Aplin link up well before the former fired in a cross looking for Lennox Magalhaes at the far post; unfortunately for the midfielder, the cross in drifted just wide. Bay captain Michael Scott fired well over the bar minutes later.
Marske striker Tom Eglinton had two decent chances to give his side the lead during what proved the quietest period of the first half, with a header floating just wide of the far post before another headed attempt on goal was collected comfortably by Cameron.
The floodgates began to open again, opportunity-wise, moments after that; Clark blasting a decent strike for Bay, while United captain Tommy Marron, Joynes and Eglinton all saw good chances come to nothing. Before the half-time whistle blew, however, Magalhaes and Clark both saw attempts on goal go wide; the latter’s effort being blocked well by Eglinton.
With the second half just three minutes old, Joe Thompson’s powerful free kick from just under 35 yards out whiskered just over the bar for the hosts.
In the 54th minute, a rash challenge on Livermore by United captain Marron saw the former’s teammates immediately surround the referee calling for a red card for the latter. However, the referee, after a moment of deliberation, booked the Marske defender instead; thus deeming the foul not as dangerous as first thought.
Bay had two quick chances just after the hour mark to open the scoring, but Liam Heywood’s strike from a corner was blocked and subsequently cleared, while Livermore fired wide after an excellent run forward by Luca Shilling.
The defining moment of this tightly-contested game came with 26 minutes to go, when Joseph Power’s foul on James Sayer in the box saw the hosts awarded a penalty and, ultimately, the first real opportunity of the entire match. Kenzie Harker then stepped up from the spot and slotted the ball past Cameron to give the hosts the lead (1-0).
As this clash drew to a close, Bay had three opportunities to rescue what would have been a thoroughly-deserved point. Heywood’s header at the far post from a corner was somehow kept out on the line by Algie, before Aplin curled a free kick just over the bar minutes after. MacDonald also almost diverted the ball into his own net from an Aplin throw-in as second-time stoppage time approached, but his blushes were spared by Algie in the Marske goal.
As a result, Whitley now have seven straight league losses to their name, but on this occasion, the effort from Jay Bates’s men more than warranted what would have been a deserved point. A much better performance from Bay compared to recent weeks, but ultimately, it’s Kenzie Harker’s winner from the spot that saw the hosts take all three points.
Bay will return to Teeside this coming Tuesday (1st September), when they travel to newly-promoted Redcar Town for a 7.45pm kick-off.

My Personal Player-Of-The-Match: Alan Achuo - The young defender’s best performance in a Whitley Bay shirt without a doubt. Almost every time the hosts came forward, Achuo was on hand to make the tackles and clearances required to keep the tally low in a well-contested game of football.
