WHITLEY BAY 0-3 CARLISLE CITY

Having suffered a narrow defeat in a seven-goal thriller three days prior, an injury-hit Whitley Bay’s search for their second win of the campaign was extended further. Would that change with the visit of Carlisle City to Hillheads on Tuesday night? One massive positive for the hosts was that talisman Mackenzie Sharpe was back in the match-day squad and starting up front; having served a three-game ban. New signing Jamie Storey also made his debut for the club as part of the starting XI following his arrival from Whickham.
It would be Storey trying to forge the first opportunity of the game as he raced down the right hand side before whipping in a decent ball, but the cross was heavy and fluttered over everyone’s heads. Spencer Ashcroft then got forward down the left, delivering a cross towards George Brady, but the Bay No.11 missed his mark.
Having only made his return to the side, Sharpe found himself coming off with a thigh injury with just 13 minutes gone, and as a result, James Marshall replaced him up top.
Marshall didn’t take long to find himself in the box for Bay, as Jack Errington’s teasing cross almost found the young striker, but Alfie Buckmaster headed the ball away to safety. Lennox Magalhaes also saw a close-range effort drift just in front of goal with no teammate there to latch onto the loose shot.
A rare moment of attack from the visitors saw Jordan Holt take aim from just outside the Whitley box a few minutes after, but Preston Leech saved the City No.8’s strike comfortably; Henry Walker’s stunning strike also hitting the post via a deflection off Michael Scott minutes later.
In the 33rd minute, despite Bay being the better side so far, the visitors would take the lead through Alfie Buckmaster after his original close-range effort was parried back out to him and he tucked home the rebound past Leech (0-1).
Whitley almost responded instantly, as Brady’s long ball forward found Magalhaes in acres of space before the latter made a great run towards goal before forcing the save out of Aaran Taylor.
The visitors would get a second right before the first half was out, as Jordan Irving swept the ball home into the far corner after a decent move by City; Keighran Kerr with a smart assist for the goalscorer as his low ball reached the former’s feet (0-2).
Bay’s first half began to spiral out of control in horrendous fashion as Matthew Griggs was stretchered off with an awful leg injury, with Alan Achuo coming on as an ever-growing Whitley injury list piled up.
Whitley’s first real chance of the second half fell the way of half-time substitute Jamie Clark, who - after a wonderful through ball from Kieren Aplin - turned and got away from the City defence, but couldn’t get his shot away at the right point.
Up the other end, City could have clinched the points through Ewan Telford, but the visiting No.10 saw his close-range strike comfortably saved by Leech. Jordan Irving - scorer of Carlisle’s second - also saw a free kick collected swiftly by the Whitley goalkeeper shortly after. Jordan Holt also heading wide from a corner later on.
With the visitors on top, it came as a surprise when Whitley had another decent opportunity to get back into the game through Clark, but the forward whistled a great effort just wide of the bottom corner.
City continued to threaten the killer goal, as Jack Barker hit the post from another free kick for the visitors, before Walker’s header drifted towards goal but it was ultimately cleared by Scott.
Both sides kept going in their search of the next goal of this fixture, with Kerr still proving a nuisance for the Whitley backline. The City No.7 swept in a ball looking for Barker in the middle but it was cleared away by Achuo.
However, it would be City that sealed all three points with seven minutes to go, as a decent delivery from the subsequent corner found Henry Walker at the near post who headed the ball past Leech (0-3).
That goal didn’t stop Bay from trying to get back into the game, as Aplin’s fine shot from just outside the box whistled just wide of the far corner as the second half came to a close.
Whitley have now suffered six straight league defeats following this latest loss, but an ever-growing injury list continued to increase in the first half with Sharpe and Griggs both coming off. Carlisle City take all three points back to Cumbria after an impressive performance at Hillheads.
Whitley travel to Teeside to take on Marske United at 3pm this Saturday (29th August) with the hope of finally finding the win that will see their season truly get underway.

My Personal Player-Of-The-Match: Lennox Magalhaes - Another disappointing night for Bay saw the Whitley No.8 show tenacity and willingness to get his name on the scoresheet. The midfielder's all-round performance was what stole the show though, even getting back multiple times to keep out opportunities for the visitors. A bright spark on a grim night.
