PENRITH 2-0 WHITLEY BAY

After three straight league defeats without scoring, an injury-ravaged Whitley Bay side made the long midweek trip to rock-bottom Penrith, who, like Bay, had one league win to their name all season. New signings Rio Joisce, James Marshall and Matthew Griggs all made it into the match day squad, with the former starting and the two latter on the bench.
It was a fairly even opening few minutes between the two struggling sides, but it would be Bay who had the first real chance of the contest when Kieren Aplin’s through ball found Nkunku just inside the box and the latter got his shot away, but it failed to really trouble Lewis Boyd in the Penrith net who collected the effort comfortably.
After that, it was the hosts’s turn to threaten the opener, with Bay goalkeeper Preston Leech on hand to deny Alfie McDonagh from close range before Jack Errington made a brilliant last-minute tackle to keep out Matthew Williamson, who would have another strike of his own just minutes later that would be saved by Leech.
Penrith striker Daniel Smales then had an opportunity to open the scoring himself after latching onto Robbie Hebson’s cut-back, but the former scooped the ball just over the bar. McDonagh’s cross-cum-shot was then parried away by Leech and subsequently cleared, before the Penrith No.7’s latest attempt was diverted wide by Spencer Ashcroft; Matthew Story also firing wide of the far post for the hosts.
It was then the visitors looking to break the deadlock, as a great one-two between Mikel Thompson and Nkunku saw the former get the ball back and curl a decent strike towards the far corner; only for Penrith stopper Boyd to be alert and parry the ball away to safety. Alfie Livermore also struck the ball over from 30 yards as the first 45 went on.
By this point, it was a moment of magic that needed to break the deadlock in this well-contested match, and Penrith’s Jordan Palmer would provide that with four minutes left of the first half; the No.11’s stunning free kick from 30 yards out leaving Leech stranded on his goal-line to open the scoring for the hosts, who had been beginning to get on top (1-0).
Once again, Whitley were looking for a response and almost got it through new boy Rio Joisce, but the young winger saw his effort saved comfortably by Boyd, while the Penrith goalkeeper was also alert to a tame Livermore free kick and a deflected Ashcroft strike a few minutes after.
The hosts then continued to look for the goal which, on the balance of play, would kill this game off. Leech was on hand again to deny Palmer his second goal of the evening, but in the 56th minute, the Penrith No.11 would double his team's advantage after tapping the ball home past Leech from a decent cut-back by left-back Alex Potts (2-0).
Luke Brown could have added a third for the hosts after spotting Leech well off his line from 35 yards out, but the lobbed effort was brought down comfortably by the Whitley Bay goalkeeper.
Despite the scoreline, Livermore continued to get forward for Bay and tried to haul the visitors back into this contest, but his low strike was saved well by Boyd before another attempt flew just wide from 20 yards out moments after.
As the game came to an end, Smales went in search twice for a third for Penrith, but he was thwarted brilliantly by Leech on both occasions who was equal to both strikes, while Livermore struck the ball wide from a flick-on by Bay captain Michael Scott down the other end. Joisce sent a free kick just over the bar for Whitley, while Luke Brown forced a great save from Leech once again late on.
A fourth straight league defeat on the bounce for an injury-ravaged Bay without scoring now, but it was a battling performance regardless from Jay Bates’s side. Ultimately, Penrith - and in particular, Jordan Palmer - were simply more clinical on the night and in the end eased to their second league win of the campaign.
Next up for Bay is a swift reunion with Birtley Town, who visit Hillheads this coming Saturday (22nd August) for a 3pm kick-off.

My Personal Player-Of-The-Match: Jack Errington - It may have been Leech keeping the ball out of the net on multiple occasions, but the Bay defender looked bright the entire game; at times making crucial clearances to stop Penrith at the very last minute from adding to the scoreline. Errington was back to his best in Cumbria on the night.
