Ian is the club’s 5th top goalscorer with 156 goals to his name. He had two spells at the club as a player, appearing in front of the BBC Match of the Day cameras in 1989 when Whitley beat Preston North End 2-0 in the FA Cup 2nd Round at Hillheads.

He has also played professionally at Barnsley and Aldershot and locally at Blyth, Durham, Bishop Auckland and briefly at Jarrow Roofing before returning to take over as manager in January 2004. Ian won the Northern League Manager of the Year title in 2006/07 after guiding the team to the League Championship.

He holds a unique record of having scored the winning goal in the 2001/02 FA Vase Final and later managing the team to Vase glory in three consecutive seasons, 2008/09, 2009/10 and 2010/11. He was also voted Northern League Manager of the Year on all three occasions, another unique record.

After leaving Whitley Bay in February 2014, he had a spell managing Durham City before leaving them in October 2015.

He returned to Whitley Bay as manager in February 2016, on a temporary basis until the end of the season.
